I was the air traffic controller for 2 weeks which included the opening ceremony. I was strictly forbidden to take photo's..why I don"t know but I did as I was told in those days. I arrived on a 34 sqdn Beverley carrying a mk 5 fire engine.. The tyres had to be deflated so it would fit into the aircraft..At one stage I had 17 aircraft o all types lined up. The first official departure after the opening ceremony was a 6 sqn Canberra.

About Me
Joined Op Crown in 1964 to 1965, one of the Gunners attached to the transport corps.

"I was in this incident attached at the time to the RCT as they became whilst we were there. The Scammel we were in was about two vehicles behind on route to Ubon. I will always remember the local people coming along with sweet potatoes and water etc even though we had effectively shut their only road down!! Thats a D8 on it's back by the way!!I remembered another little thing from the Op. A Scots Engineer and myself got a little group going and we actually broadcast on 'Op Crowns' own radio station, we played a few Beatles numbers!! Do you remember that? There were about 5 or 6 of us Gunners there at that time, all driving."

JANUARY 2017

Dear Hank,

The other day, I was , for some reason thinking about where I was, and what I was doing 50 years ago!  Remembering my time at Crown Camp, I thought I’d have a look on the internet and found your site - which brought back many more memories!

I was between school and university, and was lucky to get the opportunity to come out to Malaya and Thailand to work for the Huts and Canteens, Church of Scotland. I was sent out to give David Moonie a six month break since he had been at Crown for three years or so. I was young and inexperienced, and thankfully didn’t have to do any church or social work !

I ran the book/magazine shop, library (which also involved taking books out to the camp at 2 Troop each week) and snooker room. I was billeted in the officers quarters/mess.

I didn’t really have enough to keep me busy, so got involved with the camp radio station broadcasting and preparing programmes like “Crown Desert Island Discs” - though we had a very limited supply of records to choose from!

Some of the men may remember the rugby match played between 59 Squadron and a nearby New Zealand regiment - it was rough, played on a bone hard pitch, but we did have one or two players who had played for the Army.  I was the referee, but cannot remember the outcome!

I filled in the rest of my time sitting in with the M.O. (the only air-conditioned room in the camp) and helped out at the V.D. clinic in the village once a week ( staining the slides ). After Crown, I went on to study Medicine at Edinburgh and then worked thirty-five years in the N.H.S. .

Sad news From Mick Norton
Dave (Jock) Cameron
Passed July 2014
R.I.P
If anyone has a photo of Jock
from 60s please send it

It was only recently that I had heard that my great friend Dave (Jock) Cameron had died.  Dave died last July in Scotland after heart and lung problems took their toll, over many years.  You may wish to place a note on your  Crown/ website.

Many ex "Crown" personnel who served on either the airfield or road projects will never forget Jock Cameron/Black Angus, both as a Cpl on the airfield and then as a Sgt on the road project.  He was ex Christmas Island and Kenya and brought a wealth of practical experience to the Crown job.  In fact there is no doubt the 25 miles of Post crown road would never have been finished to its final high standard without the personal involvement of Jock Cameron. yes, we were inundated with GEs, CoWs, MPFs and blue chip officers, but they never seemed to be able to get the plant operators to go the, "extra mile", indeed on occasions, work double shifts, as did Jock Cameron.  At this juncture I should mention other notable sappers on the road project who are also sadly no longer with us, WO2 John McCormack BEM and SSgt Paddy O'Brien RE, who worked as a plant team, with Dave, and produced the end product.

Never one to suffer fools gladly he always spoke his mind, which we in 54 Plant Troop, always appreciated. Under that gruff exterior was a very funny and warm hearted old plantie who kept a paternal eye on all us wild plant operators, per chance we were running astray..!

He left the Army after 22 years and worked until well into his 60s on plant related jobs in Scotland, until illness took its toll.  We met up several times over the years, most recently at Mick Deighton's (ex 59), funeral, in Leeds in early 2013.  I attach a photo taken at that time.

They broke the mould when Jock Cameron was created, we will never see his like again.  RIP old friend.

Mick

Hi Hank
came across your webb page purely by accident.  I thought I would see exactly where we were in Thailand, so googled in Kok Talat and was surprised with what came up.
Seeing pages on OP CROWN I went to these immediately. Absolutely brilliant ! Going through the names and photos bought back memories of 50 years that seemed like only yesterday.
My name is Tony Wright and I was at Shorncliffe when 59 Sqn was forming. I was on the advance party for Singapore and flew there on 10th Dec 1963. Then went by LST to Bangkok in Feb 64. Left Thailand Dec 65 for Singapore and in Feb for Blighty.
Once again wonderful site, can't keep away from it.
Cheers Tony

Welcome

Yes, I'm still in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. I have a Thai partner and we both do some teaching here.  We've just just had our 5th (I think) rememberance service at the main city park.  It started with just a few expats in a corner of the park where there is a small monument for POWs that were kept here by the Japs and died.  An ex sapper, (lifer) Bob Longridge, used to organise it but, now, it's been taken over by the Thais and turned into a major local event, but slightly diminishing its original purpose. Every year, the expats present a bouquet to the surviving descendants of a Thai woman who secretly handed food to POWs.
There are quite a few ex 'Op Crown' guys who travel here for the occasion and also visit the the airfield they built (at Kok Te Lat, where I also served).  They do a little ceremony at the field for the sappers who died there in the 60s.

Dear Friends,
I wonder if you could help me in my quest to locate and buy a 28 Brigade shoulder flash.
I have been trying to find one for years with no luck.  I am hoping that one of your members, or contacts, has one, in reasonable condition, that you are willing to sell; or can steer me in the direction of where I can buy one.

Just back from Thailand again. Been to Crown Airfield as per usual and I thought a short, public note appropriate for any interested parties. The Thai Army have a section on the airfield and they have carried out a few repairs to the runway, resurfaced the run-offs at either end, completely surfaced the main road into Crown, straightened the bend that lead towards the Camp entrance so that it lead...s into the parking area, built two buildings on the edge of the parking area, removed trees and shrubs that have grown up to the edge of the runway. The plan is to fence off the airfield to prevent stray cows and buffalo wandering onto the runway and install gates to prevent locals crossing when a plane is due to land. The Thai Army at Roi Et plan to use the field in the first instance and hope to extend use to the public the make the field both a national and international airport. This will follow the lead of the airport at Roi Et itself which I understand lies within the boundary of the Thai Army camp in Roi Et. Looks like one day we may be able to buy a ticket to Loeng Nok Tha international.

Don Hadden
Hi Hank, I was in the RAF based at Seletar, one of the 3 RAF bases in Singapore (Tengah, Changi). Apr 65-Sept 67. My unit was 6 Tactical Signals Unit, the mobile sigs unit of HQ 224 Group commanded by AVM Foxley-Norris who flew Mossies in WW2.

We arrived in a Seletar Beverley before Harry Secombe arrived, via a hotel in Bangkok and Harry and Anita flew back with us to Singapore in another Beverley.
No idea how long we were up there but it needed to be weeks really and no idea why we went there in the 1st place.
I remember the fire engine "falling" on its side and being warned by the Doc not to drink the local hooch or go with the girls. You will go blind he said so water down the booze with coke. One of our guys spilt his drink and it lit up like a bonfire with a match put to it (mostly coca cola in it) !! I was so ill i remember wishing i was dead. Vomiting all night. Laying on the verannda of the basha freezing my buns off.
ex SAC Donald Hadden....telegraphist by trade.
Don.

Great memories
Hi Hank, I have another mission for you,
at this time some of us are searching for Hippo Hall of 59 sqn.
During Tony Cliffe's visit to the old village of Ban Kok Talat
he asked one of the locals if he remembered a bloke called HIPPO.
The local then burst into song singing --Have you seen the muffin man.
Hippo Hall used to teach the local kids English songs and this local guy remembered him well.

Message from
Terry Colvin in Bangkok
Howdy Hank,
Thank you for sending me your Op Crown website.  I took the liberty of
forwarding it with a short intro to several mailing lists -- Thailand, Laos,
Cambodia Brotherhood (TLC); USARSUPTHAI (U.S. Army Support, Thailand);
and U-Tapao Alumni Association.
As you probably know I saw Loeng Nok Tha airfield in a derelict state.  When
assigned to the Phu Mu Signal Site (8/73 to 1/74) we used the airfield to bring
in a medic monthly and urgent small items for O&M.  The U.S. Army operated
a klong-hopper service using U-21 two-engine prop planes.
Say, I know there is a reunion in November but don't know the exact dates and
the meeting points.  Who should I contact.
Thanks again and best wishes,
Terry W. Colvin

Hi, Hank.
I am a retired sapper (Canadian Army) and currently living in Thailand. I happen to have a house about 5 Km from the LNT airstrip and visit it frequently. I have taken several measurements in the area and come up with a length of 1600m (5280ft) and around 120m wide.
I would like to know how thick the concrete slab is.
I have taken several pictures of the area, many of which I posted on flickr.
As I learn my way around your web sites, I will post some pictures there as well.
The best,
-Chris Stanford
Hank Says
Can one of you answer the question on thickness of concrete
